Petrified wood is a fossilized piece of wood. It forms when plant material is buried by sediment and protects it from decaying due to oxygen and organisms. The rich groundwater flows through the rocks, replacing the plant material with pyrite, silica, calcite, or any another inorganic material like opal. Some specimens of petrified wood are preserved so perfectly that people don't realize what it is until they try to lift it and are taken back by the weight.
