Ksitigarbha is a bodhisattva, a person on the path towards awakening, he is revered in East Asian Buddhism and usually depicted as a monk. His name translates to "earth treasure, stone, matrix or womb". Ksitigarbha is known for vowing responsibility for the instruction of all beings since the death of Gautama Buddha and until the rise of Maitreya, the future buddha prophesied to arrive in the future. He also vows not to achieve Buddhahood until all hells are emptied. He is depicted caring a staff to force the gates of hell open. For this reason he is regarded as the bodhisattva of hell being, as well as the guardian of children and patron deity of deceased children and aborted fetuses in Japanese culture, where he is known as Jizo.
